We all live close, in Burlington and in Hamilton. We are all God fearing and Reformed church attending. Our families are active in their respective churches and in their respective Christian schools and community, as was modeled for us by our forefathers and mothers. These are all most enriching experiences for us.
Our first 10 years of marriage, we lived in Calgary, where we made the most of our time. We learned to know the west and love the west. The Lord remained faithful as we established a successful business there and He continued to more than adequately provide for our every need.
When we moved to Burlington, our family was blessed in that our children grew up with Opa and Oma, inspiring fond memories, as our respective Opas and Omas did for both Cathy and myself. While they were able, we churched together and beyond that we were privileged to cater to their needs until their dying days. All these were great life enriching experiences.
At the time Opa died in Grimsby in 2002, so did the family business succumb to an unfortunate chain of events. The business had provided for our respective families well.
At the time I was brokering Lambert Peat Moss to the professional greenhouse growers, mushroom growers and horse ranches. something I continue with to date and an opportunity I thank brothers Anko and Ralph for, to this day. Upon my return from a visit to Opa at Shalom, just prior to his death, I visited a small candy and nut packaging business along the QEW, in Grimsby. 6 months later, and after Opa’s death, Cathy and I, bought the small packaging business.
We changed the name to Scholtens Inc. and incorporated the cross of Jesus prominently into our logo, as well as the caption, “candy….since 1910”. We bought the building, put the name on it in bright lights.
In the near future we intend to move the business to Burlington, Aldershot, where Opa and Oma lived and where we still live today. Everyday we pray that God bless our endeavor and He continues to do so. Each year we put out more Lambert Peat Moss, Cottage Country Candies, Nuts and Trail Mixes, Granny Appleton Pantry Foods and Baking Ingredients.
Today we still have 2 of our 6 kids at home, Dave and Zack. Our family has always been blessed with having had Cathy as a stay at home mom, and now an “on call Nan”. In addition, she helps out in the family businesses. Having had to travel somewhat extensively in former years, today, by and large, we are home bodies, content to stay put, somewhat enslaved to our kids sports, our “too large” home and our “too large” property with Jasmine’s dog, Albert, our rabbit, chickens and pigeons, all of which we enjoy.
The times we do get away would be a bi/annual trip to the peat bogs on the shores of the St. Lawrence river, and trade shows here there and everywhere to which we do usually attach a few days of sight seeing and other activities. This past winter, some of us we were fortunate enough to spend some time skiing/boarding at both Whistler BC and Lake Placid New York. We also enjoy some camping each year, usually at one of the Great Lakes and at Arrowhead.
We are all really looking forward to this reunion.
We marvel at God’s plan and His unfolding of it, before our very eyes each day. Fathers instructing, and mothers teaching, the glorious deeds of the Lord, to that next generation. “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. It is as He said it would be. Old men will dream dreams and young men will see visions. Our days are like grass, here today, gone tomorrow, but His steadfast love endures forever. Our generation……withering grass, fading flowers. His Word….it’ll stand forever. To see and to witness that next generation setting their hope on God. The reunion we so look forward to is a gift of His abounding love, His blessing upon our family. We share a rich heritage. Let’s celebrate it and pass that on. Let’s all make the best of it.
